@nealj111 : The frequency will tell you if it is an acceptable nugget shooter. 14 KHZ and up are the most sensitive to smaller nuggets – that said, nuggets have been found with all metal detectors, even the ones operating at 6-8. The secret to that is finding the smallest coil available. There won't be much depth at all, but it will pick up the near surface pieces. Good luck!

@TheIcoolable : Just to get in and start finding coins, jewelry, iron, inexpensively, I cannot recommend the Garrett ACE 150/250 or 350 line of detectors highly enough. Everyone reading this will have a differing opinion, but when price is a factor, they are the winners in my opinion. I have used them all and own the 350. You can get to details of many of the detector models at my website (click the treasuresites link) and going to the books, videos, treasure section – select the best price.

Flagold,

Great videos! I am in the market for a detector and have narrowed it down to the Infinium LS or a Gold bug 2. Which would work better for highly mineralized soil? I am really only interested in gold hunting. I won't be looking for coins or relics. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

flagold @ 6:39 am #

@ALVOTTERO : the Infinium was made for highly mineralized soil, it is the correct choice with the caveat that it can't detect an individual flake of gold like the GB II can – it needs a small nugget to see.

@flagold how well will the gold bug II do for following black sands?

flagold @ 6:16 pm #

@terry455 : Terry: the GBII isn't designed to follow black sands at all. Will not give a readout on soil mineralized content.

Hi Matt, very good info here, I got the settings for Gain and Disc, but where do you want the threshold setting set to and then on the Trac switch where should that be set to ground, lock or salt?

Great video.. thanks.. ordered a metal dectector.. just got laid off, welder.
san diego.

rz9027 @ 12:09 pm #

GOOD VIDEO.. rick in san diego..

flagold @ 12:27 pm #

@rz9027 : the very best of luck to you! When Eastern Airlines folded in the early 1990's it seemed like the end of the world to me and 80,000 other workers (some committed suicide, including one on my crew). I was determined to make it on my own after that, and it made all the difference. Prospecting may or may not be the thing that you end up doing, but your willingness to even give it a try rather than give up and give in means you'll probably come out of this recession OK. Good luck!

Great video, I got a Fisher F-2 for starters with a small prospector 5 inch dish. Your videos got me buying metal detectors like shoes every year !. Your well explained videos lets us understand our metal detector ! . My next detector will be a Fisher Gold-bug 2

Donatillo1961 @ 11:24 am #

What model MXT is this unit on 7:00 time . for the three modes freequency that I see. and the name of that coil ..?

flagold @ 12:29 pm #

@Donatillo1961 : the coil is a Whites' Eclipse Shooter DD. The small coil turns the MXT into a very good nugget shooter (coinshooter as well). Very best of luck in your metal detecting!

Fantastic video, thank you. I had a question regarding choice of detector… I live in CA and in about 2 weeks I'm going up to north CA.We'll be prospecting for nuggets up there as well as panning, and I'd like to have a MD to use for coins and jewelry, so I was planning on getting the MXT. But I'm worried it might not be good enough for nuggets, and that I should get a GBII instead. What are your thoughts? Is the MXT good enough for prospecting?
Thanks.
-max

flagold @ 6:44 pm #

@stoatmax : yes, the MXT is one of the great detectors of all time. It is not a nugget hunter right out of the box, however, you will need the small "shooter" coil for maximum sensitivity. Practice on small pieces of shot before you go and read the manual several times (the stock setup instructions are written on the detector for the 3 modes it has). Doesn't get much more user friendly than that. The GBII – top notch detector but is a one trick pony – prospecting.

stoatmax @ 6:51 pm #

@flagold
Fantastic! Thank you for the quick reply. Would you recommend the Whites Eclipse Shooter DD coil you used in this video? And as far as learning to use the detector, will the manual give me enough info to learn to use it correctly and efficiently?

July 4, 2011

flagold @ 7:21 am #

@stoatmax :Yes to both questions and Whites itself has some videos on using the MXT (various ways) – very best of luck in the field to you.
