Gold for August delivery was popping $12.70 to $1,261.40 an ounce at the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The gold price has traded as high as $1,262 and as low as $1,243.10 according to Kitco's gold index.

The signals you will get on a wet rainy day will likely be deeper than on other days.

Sniping for gold is a hit and run, "skim the cream off the top" method of prospecting that's been practiced by gold hunters for centuries.

In fact, not all that long ago in our own country, many hundreds if not thousands of unemployed Depression-Era men, along with a smaller number of women (even with children in tow) turned to the gold bearing streams of California's Mother Lode area to snipe for gold just to survive those harsh, lean years. Most only made from pennies to a dollar or two a day. But that was quite enough to get them through those tough times!

One gold sniping man and wife team from those years was Jesse and Dorothy Coffey. Accompanied by their fiery little dog, they made a living sniping for gold and had a great time doing it all throughout the depression. They camped and sniped alongside creeks and rivers in California's "Mother Lode". Thankfully, they bequeathed a warm and exciting account of their four year long gold sniping adventure, in the form of a biography as told to and written by George Hoeper. So, what exactly IS gold sniping?

Sniping for gold can be defined as:

Well known is the story of O'Reiley and McLaughlin who accidentally discovered the Comstock Lode silver bonanza while working a small deposit of placer gold, tossing away a blue-black waste that later turned out to be rich silver ore.

A century ago, Jim Butler, while traveling from his ranch in central Nevada, noticed some quartz vein material. Being a good prospector, he collected a sample, but he thought so little of his find that it sat on his porch for months before it was tested. That sample became the first of many rich discoveries at Tonopah.

I could write a whole book telling the stories of these individual prospectors who, whether intentionally or by accident, found rich deposits of gold and other valuable ores. These finds have had no small impact on the development of our country - historically millions upon millions of ounces of gold have been recovered from deposits found by individual prospectors.
